The exhibition ”Kenya Burning” at the Nairobi Gallery gives a detailed account of the horrific events ensuing the election of December 2007. This important exhibition shows extremely violent photographs and a documentary covering the events from the perspective of the media.

Members of the SE Forum team (Harry Mcneil, Åse Botha and Jakob Sundberg) with Peter Ongera, one of the local partners, providing valuable information and contacts. Peter believes that the sole cause of the post-election violence is the struggle for and unfair distribution of resources.

Christine Karingithi of CEP Africa (a CARE International initiative supporting entreprenreurial initiatives) talked to the team about the business climate in Nairobi and Kenya. Abu Musuuza, head of Ashoka East Africa, one of SE Forum’s local partners. Ashoka is a worldwide network financially supporting social entrepreneurs, in order for them to realize their ideas.

David Kuria, a social entrepreneur who is addressing the problem of the lack of public sanitation facilities by launching ”Ikotoilet”, a multipurpose public toilet that offers a variety of services, such as a kiosk for snacks and shoe-shining. The initiative is a success and Miss Kenya and other Kenyan celebrities are promoting Ikotoilet.

Matthew of EPS, which is an organization turning waste oil at garages into a valuable product, by collecting and selling it as burning fuel, thereby also contributing to a cleaner local environment.

Adrian Mukhebi, who decided to set up an agriculture commodity exchange service, in order to empower small sized agriculture producers by providing them with price information about their products and rendering the overall market more efficient.

Members of the SE Forum team (Jakob Sundberg, Åse Botha, Harry Mcneil and Eliza Kücükaslan) with Anders Riedenfalk, who is the newly appointed trade promoter at the Swedish Embassy of Nairobi. Mr Riedenfalk sees the need to introduce a Swedish Kenyan network involving small and medium sized companies and start-ups from both countries.
